Painting Baseboards: A Step-by-Step Guide

Painting baseboards can be a quick project that can significantly refresh your home. Both latex and oil-based paints can be used, but water-based latex paints are generally easier to clean. For baseboards, a slightly glossy finish is often recommended as it is more resistant to scuffs and cleans better than a matte finish. Therefore, semi-gloss or gloss paints are the best choices.

Tools and Materials:

  • Rag
  • Eye protection and gloves
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Putty knife
  • Fine-grit sandpaper or sanding sponge
  • Painter's tape
  • Wood filler
  • Semi-gloss or gloss latex paint
  • Solvent

Instructions:

  1. Clean Previously Painted Baseboards: Baseboards tend to accumulate a lot of dirt. Before painting, clean them thoroughly. For wooden baseboards, avoid using water and opt for a special solvent diluted in water.

  2. Repair Imperfections: Before painting, fill any large holes that have appeared over time with wood filler. It's similar to wall putty and can be applied with a small putty knife. Large defects should be sanded down, while small imperfections or scratches can be left unfilled.

  3. Sand Baseboards: If you've applied a lot of wood filler, sand the filled areas with fine-grit sandpaper before priming. Manual sanding with a small piece of sandpaper or a flexible sanding sponge is usually better than machine sanding. Sanding is necessary for old baseboards that may have several layers of paint, but new baseboards don't require it.

  4. Prepare Walls and Floor: Use painter's tape to cover the bottom edge of the wall, just above the baseboards, and the joint between the floor and the baseboard. While time-consuming, this preparation will save you from a lengthy cleanup after the job is done.

  5. Prime Baseboards: Prime any previously filled and sanded areas. Other parts of the baseboard may not need priming. Stir the primer thoroughly. Apply the primer along the length of the baseboard. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  6. Paint Baseboards: If you purchased the paint a while ago, check its expiration date. Open the can away from the work area, but above a protective film, and mix it thoroughly. As with the primer, be careful not to submerge the brush more than a third of its length. For the first coat, use a small amount of paint. For the second coat, use slightly more paint.
